JIM VAN RY WW II Born in Holland, Michigan in 1922. July 4 1942 Sworn into the "Naval Cadet program on a patriotic Fourth of July, at Detroit, Michigan. December 1942: Received orders to Iowa City, Iowa, and began pre-flight school at Iowa University. Very physical and double time for three months. March 1943 From pre-flight school to primary flight training at Minneapolis, Minnesota. There was winter in that city up through April. A lot of frostbitten noses and ears from Stearman flying. July 1943 Early in, went down to Pensacola, Florida. Basic training in SNV/BT1 3 aircraft for two months. Next phase was final squadron in SNJ/AT aircraft for three months. |
